From my 20’s on, I knew that there was something wrong with my reproductive system. I never had normal menstrual cycles and my weight had been up and down since I was 25. My friend who had been to Dr. Shaykh for in-vitro to have her three girls told me how knowledgeable Dr Shaykh was with a great bedside manner. She told me that he really cares about his patients. Knowing my history, I never even bothered to try to have a baby with my husband before consulting with Dr. Shaykh. It’s a good thing, because I would have been trying and getting nowhere fast. He diagnosed my problem on the first exam as polycystic ovary syndrome, and he told me that my chances of getting pregnant were slim without an intervention of some kind. He took the time to explain all of my options and gave me his opinion, but ultimately he left the decision up to my husband and me. Being 34 at the time, I decided to go the in-vitro route. The first time, I did not get pregnant, and Dr. Shaykh was very disappointed and was willing to do what I wanted to do every step of the way. The second time, I got pregnant!!!! I had an extremely tough pregnancy due to nausea and borderline pre-eclampsia, but Dr. Shaykh and his staff was there for me every step of the way and treated me with the utmost dignity and respect. I was so impressed with him and still am today that I have decided to stay on with him and his staff as a patient. He gave me Matthew, the best present I could ever ask for, and I will always cherish what Dr Shaykh did for my family and me.

Emily Grace and Daniel Aiden, those are our fraternal twins that were born on July 12, 2006. We would not be experiencing the long awaited joys of parenthood without the help of Dr. Marwan Shaykh and his staff at the Southwest Virginia Fertility Center. We had tried to become pregnant for several years unsuccessfully. I underwent major surgery for a severe case of endometriosis. After a long period of healing, still no luck. My surgeon and gynecologist at the time suggested IVF as an option. So we visited a fertility center that was out of state. They were a very large facility with a large patient load. We decided after meeting with a doctor that we were going to try a cycle of IVF. We never actually saw that doctor again, we always saw a different doctor at each visit for ultrasounds. We were confused about the whole process and always felt kind of in the dark. It was hard to reach a nurse or doctor if we had a question about a medication. We just didn’t feel like we got the individual attention that we needed to feel confident about the process. After many weeks of six hour roundtrip drives, many in the snow, hotel rooms, early appointments, daily shots, and a lot of anticipation….we had to stop the cycle due to a lack of eggs of the proper size according to the doctors there.

We first heard about the Southwest Virginia Fertility Center through a family member who worked at Lewis Gale Hospital. We set up an appointment. We immediately liked Dr. Shaykh and began an IVF cycle with him shortly after that. Unfortunately our first attempt with him was unsuccessful. We were again discouraged. After about a year or so, we decided to try again. We trusted Dr. Shaykh and went back to talk to him again. This time he suggested using donor eggs. With our history, we felt it would be our best shot. We began another IVF cycle in the fall of 2005. Dr. Shaykh was always available for questions. We had problems several times with receiving our medications thru the mail order company due to bad weather. Dr. Shaykh did all he could to make sure we were able to get those medications any way possible. We always felt comfortable talking to Dr. Shaykh and he was always able to answer us in a way that didn’t make us feel like we were just another case. He never hurried us; he always made sure we understood every aspect of the process. He was very caring and down to earth, unlike our previous experience at the other facility.

We were due to have our pregnancy test done right after Christmas. We were so nervous and anxious. I let my husband answer the telephone when the nurse called to give us the results. I WAS PREGNANT!! Not only was the test positive, my levels were very high, possibly indicating more than one baby. We went back to see Dr. Shaykh in a couple weeks to confirm the presence of the egg sac. He was so excited to tell us there were two babies growing!! It was a dream come true times 2!

I had no problems during the pregnancy. My water broke about six weeks early. The babies were healthy and beautiful at 5 lbs 8 oz and 4 lbs 10 oz, born two minutes apart.

Our family cannot begin to thank Dr. Shaykh enough for his commitment to help us. He has the greatest expertise and skill to help couples that thought all hope was lost.

Sincerely,
Dana and Jason Bowling

We are in our late twenties and early thirties, and we never thought we would have a problem conceiving a child. After the frustration of trying to conceive for over a year, and after taking countless fertility tests later, my husband and I found ourselves in the office of Dr. Marwan Shaykh. Dr. Shaykh's vast knowledge of infertility and infertility treatments also made us feel extremely comfortable with him. To go along with Dr. Shaykh’s intelligence, he also has a great sense of humor and bedside manner. These attributes, along with a very friendly staff, made us feel very at ease during the process.

Upon talking to Dr. Shaykh and weighing our options, we decided to try in-vitro fertilization. Dr. Shaykh did an excellent job of explaining the procedure. In February of 2006 we started our IVF cycle. We were both very nervous, but Dr. Shaykh was supportive and caring throughout the entire process. After Dr Shaykh performed the transfer of the fertilized eggs, the two-week wait began.

On Friday March 10 I went to his office for the pregnancy blood test. Two hours later we received the call that would change our lives forever. “You’re Pregnant!” called out Tina, in a very excited voice.

The pregnancy was wonderful and on November 1st we welcomed our beautiful baby boy into the world, weighing 9 pounds and 5 ounces. We thank Dr. Shaykh for helping us conceive our son.
